Pittsburgh United, Pennsylvania United, and our affiliated political committees are a family of organizations made up of individual members and coalition partners who are multi-racial, multi-generational, poor and working-class people in cities and towns ranging from Pittsburgh to Erie, and Greensburg to State College. Our organizations are built, run, and owned by our members - individual people from all walks of life who come together to build power, community, and put poor and working people in charge of what happens in our communities. We are constantly developing innovative organizing, education, and communications strategies to fight and win campaigns while growing our membership. To carry out our vision, Pittsburgh and PA United have a core staff of 30 people across organizing, canvassing, digital, data, fundraising, and operations that at times flexes up to 100+ people during election seasons. We strive to integrate and embody our values and principles in our organizing and base building throughout Pennsylvania and in our internal operations, systems, and employment practices. Internally, our organization fosters a culture of learning, placing a high priority on healthy supervisory practices, coaching, and staff development.
The Managing Director, People & Culture (hereafter described simply as Managing Director) provides essential internal guidance to administrative leaders within the family of organizations, creating and maintaining systems and practices that result in alignment of staff across the organization, progress towards our desired organizational culture, and partnership with our staff union, PA Workers United.
As a senior leadership role, the Managing Director assures that the organization carries out its Theory of Change (Guiding Principles) through the coordination and integration of strategies and systems, including integrating the vision and goals established by members, the Board of Directors and staff. The Managing Director models and supports all staff members in understanding and developing an orientation towards our Guiding Principles so that our strategies and organizing center our model as a membership organization.
The Managing Director is the leader of a team of leaders who carry out organizational planning and priority setting; maintain rigorous campaign goals, metrics and evaluation practices; and foster understanding and collaboration across disciplines and work areas. The Managing Director assures the development of lead and management staff so that healthy and effective supervisory and management practices are consistent throughout the organization.
This role ensures staff are receiving professional development which contributes to the overall organizational goal. While not directly responsible for programming team members or initiatives, the Managing Director’s cultural and developmental impact should span to these teams through increasingly healthy and productive managerial relationships. It owns the labor-management relationship and implementation of our Collective Bargaining Agreement, as well as the coordination of human resources functions. Candidates for this position must be committed to maintaining a positive relationship with PA Workers United.
