PowerSwitch Action is a national network organizing to build multi-racial feminist democracies in our cities, towns, and regions. Together with our 21 affiliates we are driving an agenda to bring the billions of dollars in local public investments under the oversight of the communities most impacted, to expand decision making and power to more of the residents in our regions, to support the building and growth of member-based organizations, and to fight corporate actors who use their power to extract and cause harm to our communities.

About the position

The Campaign Director is a senior organizer and campaigner excited to build multi-faceted, experimental campaigns with local organizations to win power for workers and communities locally, statewide and nationally. This position will provide strategic leadership for a national campaign challenging app-based rideshare and delivery corporations, in collaboration with local and national partners inside and outside of our network; drive campaign execution; and supervise and support the campaign team. We are looking for a mission-aligned experienced and savvy corporate campaign strategist and leader who can build strong coalitions and effectively and equitably supervise staff.

Location

This is a primarily remote position. Ideally, this position will be located in a city/state in which one of our affiliates is located, which are as follows: San Jose, Ontario, Los Angeles, Oakland, Santa Barbara, and San Diego, CA; New York, NY; Phoenix, AZ; Wisconsin; Boston, MA; Detroit, MI; Atlanta, GA; Chicago, IL; Minnesota; Missouri; Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, PA; Seattle, WA; Nashville, TN; and Commerce City, CO. We will consider exceptional candidates in other locations.

Travel

This position will be required to travel 1-3 times/month for 1-3 days/trip.

Job Responsibilities

The 4 major areas of responsibility (i.e., the most important, time-consuming “buckets of work”) include:

1. In collaboration with campaign staff and partner organizations, develop campaign strategy and tactics, based on a comprehensive view of the field, the political and legal landscape, and industry trends and directions: 

  • Convene organizers, researchers, communicators, and campaigners as well as organizational leaders across a set of partner organizations to develop shared analysis, campaign strategy, and tactics;
  • Develop and maintain a robust understanding of industry, policy, political, and organizing trends in app-based/platform work to inform strategy;
  • Lead team in developing campaign plans that build and test power, with interim benchmarks;
  • Develop and manage a campaign budget.

2.  Drive the execution of the campaign through the direction of and coordination of field, communication, research, legal, and other campaign elements:

  • Work closely with staff from organizing, communication, research, legal and other teams to develop work plans that, taken together, ensure effective tactical execution;
  • Create systems for timely communication and decision making, while maintaining strong organizational risk management practices;
  • Ensure strategy, tactics, and plans align with capacity and resources, including the hiring and managing of consultants or development of new partnerships;
  • Lead regular and rigorous evaluation of strategy and tactics, and identifying any necessary adjustments or pivots.

3. Build and maintain relationships across different formations as part of long-term movement building in the sector:

  • Build genuine relationships with partners based on shared interests and values;
  • Identify and pursue strategic short- and long-term collaborations;
  • Develop and share knowledge and insights about the campaign and organizing landscape to inform future strategy.

4. Supervise, mentor, and develop campaign staff and anchor an interdepartmental staff team and consultants:

  • Ensure you and the team are aligned about what success looks like and how you’ll know it when we see it;
  • Ensure that the team delivers great results using strong and equitable day-to-day management and project management practices;
  • Support the campaign team’s success by removing barriers, addressing challenges, and providing advice and direction as needed;
  • Be a support and champion for staff and support them to do their best work;
  • Hold an organizational perspective; work to build trust, cohesion, and alignment between your staff, leadership, and our overall direction.

What are we looking for?

  • Experienced and savvy corporate campaign strategist and leader: 
    • Ability to develop and execute corporate campaign strategy and tactics that build power for working people and lead to campaign victories, at local and national levels;
    • Ability to identify gaps or needs in the landscape and campaign and create a plan to address those gaps;
    • Strong facilitator who can support sharp strategic thinking across a campaign team to develop shared strategy and tactics;
    • Familiarity with leveraging research, legal, and corporate strategies; 
    • Experience incorporating narrative strategy and tactics into overall campaign plans;
    • Familiarity with the labor movement, labor organizing and policy;
    • Ability to propose creative and strategic solutions in an environment of emergence and experimentation;
    • Experience working on a national campaign;
    • Experience working on multilingual campaign preferred but not required;
    • Experience with or knowledge of gig work and relevant corporations preferred but not required;
    • Experience with digital or communications work preferred but not required.
  • Strong coalition builder and leader: 
    • Ability to grow the coalition as needed to match campaign strategy, including proven effectiveness as an organizer, strong relational skills, ability to find common ground and manage differences;
    • Ability to represent the perspective and interests of the network within complex inter-organizational dynamics and skills to manage conflict and tension generatively;
    • Excellent process designer, agenda designer, and facilitator.
  • Exceptional project management skills: 
    • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead multiple long- and short-term projects simultaneously, including setting goals and developing a realistic work plan; 
    • Ability to move people to action and hold them accountable with and without formal authority;
    • Highly organized and strong attention to detail;
    • Proven ability to manage a complex schedule and responsibilities with minimal support or oversight;
    • Experience managing a campaign or program budget;
    • Experience working and holding relationships remotely.
  • Strong management skills: 
    • Demonstrated experience leading staff to accomplish results, ability to cultivate staff development through direct feedback and strong inclusive and equitable management practices;
    • Experience managing staff who were supervisors themselves preferred, but not required.
  • Mission alignment: 
    • Committed to the vision outlined in our long-term agenda, including building a path to collective liberation and towards a multiracial, feminist democracy that is powered by abundance, freedom and self-determination, radical inclusion, and meaningful work that is valued.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license required;
  • Fluency in English both spoken and written required; fluency or proficiency in any language other than English preferred but not required;

Salary

$91,000-$114,000/year, depending on experience

  • 6 week sabbatical for full-time employees after 5 years of employment.

COVID-19 Policy: 

PowerSwitch Action requires that all employees be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, unless a medical or religious accommodation is needed.

The work schedule can at times be greater than 40 hours per week and includes evening and weekend meetings and events, as necessary. It is not a strictly 9am-5pm position.
